A FibroScan report often contains numbers that are difficult to understand without context. The two measurements most patients notice are liver stiffness, shown in kilopascals (kPa), and CAP, shown in decibels per metre (dB/m). These numbers can support an assessment of liver scarring and fat, but they do not provide a complete diagnosis by themselves.
At Tesla Imaging & Diagnostic Centre in Meerut, FibroScan assessment is performed on FibroScan Mini 430 equipment. Your prescribing doctor should interpret the result alongside your symptoms, medical history, blood tests and any other imaging.
What does liver stiffness in kPa mean?
Liver stiffness measurement estimates how firm the liver tissue is. Scarring, also called fibrosis, can increase stiffness. In general, a higher value may suggest a greater chance of significant fibrosis, but there is no single number that means the same thing for every person.
The cause of liver disease matters. Interpretation ranges can differ in fatty liver disease, viral hepatitis, alcohol-related liver disease and other conditions. Recent food intake, active inflammation, liver congestion and technical factors may also influence a reading. This is why an isolated online cut-off should not be used to diagnose cirrhosis.
What does the CAP number mean?
CAP stands for Controlled Attenuation Parameter. It estimates how strongly the liver reduces an ultrasound signal and is used as an aid when assessing liver fat, also called steatosis. A higher CAP value can be associated with more liver fat, but the result still needs clinical interpretation.
CAP does not tell the whole story about liver health. It does not directly measure inflammation, explain the cause of fat in the liver or replace a doctor’s assessment. Blood tests, ultrasound or another investigation may be required depending on the clinical question.
Why your report may not match an online chart
FibroScan cut-offs are not universal. Your clinician considers the suspected condition, probe and examination quality, body build, blood-test results and previous measurements. A result near a threshold is especially important to interpret in context rather than label from a chart.
If a report mentions that the measurement was difficult or technically limited, do not panic. Ask whether the examination needs to be repeated or whether another test would provide more useful information.
What should you ask after receiving the result?
- Was the FibroScan measurement technically reliable?
- What do the stiffness and CAP values mean for my specific condition?
- How do the results compare with my blood tests and previous imaging?
- Do I need lifestyle advice, treatment, another test or follow-up?
- If a repeat FibroScan is advised, when should it be performed?
How to prepare for a FibroScan appointment in Meerut
Bring the prescription and relevant previous liver reports. Fasting may be required, so confirm your exact preparation when booking. Continue medicines unless your treating clinician advises otherwise, and tell the team about any major medical condition or difficulty lying comfortably for the examination.
For current availability, preparation and pricing, call or WhatsApp Tesla Imaging before visiting. The team can guide you on the next practical step but cannot interpret a result fully without the clinical information your treating doctor has.

Frequently asked questions
Questions patients ask about FibroScan reports
What does the kPa number on a FibroScan report mean?+
The kPa number is a liver stiffness measurement. Higher stiffness can be associated with more liver scarring, but the meaning depends on the liver condition, the quality of the reading and other clinical information.
What does the CAP score mean on FibroScan?+
CAP is an estimate of how much fat may be present in the liver. It is reported in dB/m and should be interpreted with your medical history, blood tests and other imaging rather than on its own.
Does a high FibroScan result always mean cirrhosis?+
No. Liver stiffness can be affected by factors other than permanent scarring, and different liver diseases use different interpretation ranges. A doctor should review the complete report before drawing a conclusion.
Can FibroScan diagnose fatty liver by itself?+
FibroScan can provide a useful estimate of liver fat and stiffness, but it is one part of an overall assessment. Your clinician may also use blood tests, ultrasound or other investigations.
Do I need to fast before FibroScan?+
Fasting may be required because recent food intake can affect measurements. Follow the preparation instructions given when your appointment is confirmed and ask the Tesla Imaging team if anything is unclear.
Can FibroScan be repeated to monitor the liver?+
Yes, a clinician may advise repeat FibroScan to monitor change over time. Comparisons are most useful when the clinical context and examination conditions are considered together.
